Saw Elysium over the weekend. Neill Blomkamp, seasoned TV 3D animator and, of late, wowie-zowie SyFy director (District 9) clearly has a gift for imagining gizmos. Much of the film’s gadgetry is extremely clever. Unfortunately, Blomkamp’s grasp of politics, economics, and history is embedded in some sort primordial South African amber. I think he skipped physics entirely. A roofless space wheel with both atmosphere and gravity probably isn’t going to happen in forty years – the time when Elysium is supposed to occur – or ever. Still, I liked the movie for the gizmos, and Matt Damon’s stoic turn as a future dystopian Jean Valjean.
